One of the most frustrating things I see is business owners stuck in a tough spot because their website is broken or inaccessible after a dispute with a developer. It annoys me so much when business owners canā€™t display their websites because of issues with a developeršŸ¤¦.

At a recent meeting, another business owner shared how they were held hostage by their web designer, who refused to fix issues. The owner, not being technical, didnā€™t know how to push back or avoid making things worse. As a result, they lost all their hard work and had to start from scratch.

No developer should treat their clients like that.

Yes, I was once on the receiving end of this when I didn't know how to build websites...And let's be honest, you kinda feel powerless.

The 5 Questions to Ask Your Next Website Developer

  1. Who owns this website you're building?
  2. Once it's done, where will it be hosted?
  3. Before you finish my website will I be able to publish it on my own platform and see it working?
  4. What are my guarantees if your server goes down or the links stop working?
  5. How much downtimes have you had in the last 6 months?

If you feel like you don't get a good answer. Probe some more or ask ChatGPT for instructions on how to prevent the situation where your website is broken or inaccessible after a dispute with a developer

There are 2 routes, you either host it yourself or you have someone else manage it for you. But like anything in life, there are pros and cons.

Self Hosted

Pros

  • You have full control
  • Can work out cheaper

Cons

  • If you mess up the site structure, format, accidentally delete anything it may cost you more to get that developer to put it back to how it was
  • You need to maintain backups

Hosted by your web developer

Pros

  • If it's a passionate and trusted web developer your stuff is safe
  • They are incentivised to make changes

Cons

  • What is the red bus scenario if they disappear
  • Costs more

You have 2 solutions:

  1. Get a web designer that is going to hand it over to you and give you a handy guide at the end
  2. Get a web designer with a process for managing client files
